Many might not know the magic touch Alex has had on bringing Australian music to the world or equally, bridging global influences to his native homeland. Alex joins the dots, and is regularly identified as an integral link in realising the vision. A key operator in promoting forward-thinking and underground music, Alex’s professional background has encompassed many angles of the industry.
Co-founder and director of Brisbane party turned record store A Love Supreme for many years, he became a central figure in building Brisbane’s recent clubbing renaissance. A long-standing relationship with Crown Ruler saw him steer Red Bull Music Academy in Queensland, overseeing their free monthly club nights and surrounding activity. Furthermore, Alex’s reputation had him consult with virtually every leading tour agency, trusted to develop, book and deliver quality, attuned events. Alex played a significant hand in unlocking acts such as Theo Parrish, Floating Points, Maurice Fulton, BADBADNOTGOOD and Dego for their first ever Brisbane performances.
In 2016 Alex relocated to London where he worked closely with acclaimed broadcaster / DJ, Gilles Peterson across his various platforms including label Brownswood Recordings, radio station Worldwide FM, and his acclaimed BBC 6 Music programme, along with adding creative input into both his Worldwide and We Out Here festivals. He acted as Sales & Distribution Manager for Brownswood, overlooking all digital and physical sales and reporting, both internally and liaising with distribution channels, along with coordinating physical media manufacturing. Alex also accomplished significant A&R and licensing work, assisting in piecing together Peterson’s cult Brownswood Bubblers compilations. This culminated in his role executive producing Sunny Side Up, a landmark compilation shining light on Melbourne’s rising alt-jazz movement. Alex has also acted as both a producer and studio assistant for countless radio programmes in London for Peterson and Worldwide FM, where he himself broadcasts his own monthly radio show.
Knowledgeable across the wide diaspora of soul and jazz tipped music and its translation into the club context, Alex is well regarded for his discerning taste and a cultivated savvy across evolving movements and trends. Over the years he has collaborated with all kinds of figures and brands. He has contributed to the likes of Boiler Room, Resident Advisor, Bandcamp, Stamp The Wax and Vice. Building on a vast network of relationships within the music industry, Alex has orchestrated radio play and premieres, linked like minded musicians and producers, and secured international bookings for Australian artists finding their feet overseas. Passionate about watching his scene grow, Alex offers much professional insight into the dealings of independent music and having it heard. He pairs both a strong understanding of niche music, along with the difficulties associated with the music industry, to achieve outcomes that hold artistic integrity. He continues to champion and contextualise underground music and is well equipped at guiding people towards deserving solutions.
