Founder / Creative Director
Few figures have contributed as much to Australian club culture as Jamie Bennett. A key piece to the puzzle, his influence is omnipresent. For over 20 years Jamie has been attributed to countless defining moments in Australian music folklore. With a bullheaded hustle, Jamie has built Crown Ruler into one of the country’s most trusted and robust institutions, recognised for championing the soulful underground with utmost thoughtfulness, integrity and loving care. He is a central part of Melbourne’s emergence as one of the world’s leading dance music hubs.
Jamie has put his nose to the grindstone, carving out a vessel that has allowed an outsider music scene to fully breathe. Across the wide compass of soul, beats and electronica he has created a platform for both artists and audiences to be afforded befitting experiences as it relates to the craft. There are other successful promoters in the field, but very few carry the same cultural probity that enables one to present music scenes with nuance and a distinct sense of authenticity. Jamie is a recognised heavy hitter, a deep music nerd and seasoned DJ who unabashedly pushes to deliver projects with sagacious quality control. His broad understanding of music culture and trends allows him to steer his operation in ways that contextualize and connect. Equally as impressive is his ability to last. In a niche market where art can often struggle to find commercial viability, Jamie’s resourcefulness and operational savvy is significant. Navigating through a cut throat industry, he boasts twenty years of success while maintaining an honest vision, a rare feat by any company within underground music.
When it relates to touring and events, Jamie is one of Australia’s most experienced and knowledgeable experts in the field. He has filled club and festival listings with some of the world’s most exciting and cutting-edge names in music for two decades, all the while fostering a flourishing local scene. With hundreds of tours under his belt, the billings are as commanding as they are diverse. A literal who’s who of contemporary club culture. Luminaries who’ve kicked the door down, and tomorrow’s radicals who are walking right through them. Jamie is experienced in all angles of event and tour management. He has acted as a venue and festival booker, touring agent, tour and artist manager, booking agent, event coordinator and producer, stage and site manager, stage designer, promoter and everything else one can think of in executing a smooth and successful party. His vast work has led to a strong network of relationships across every avenue of the industry, from production to hospitality, press to council. With constant work both importing and exporting music talent, Jamie is silently one of the most influential figures joining the dots between like-minded scenes around the world to his native Australia. An extensive list of contacts, many based on real friendships connected by music long before business, is a valuable asset he humbly holds up his sleeve. He shares strong relations with some of music’s biggest luminaries, many who have chosen him to administer tours based on trust, a confidence in knowing Jamie understands their creative vision and the right environments to let it be heard.
His ambition has pervaded the live and club landscape, going above and beyond to turn a pipe dream into reality. Jamie has found both ways to deliver seldom seen artists, and unlock unique locations thought inconceivable to pull off. He has achieved many memorable nights that have become fabled stories in Melbourne history. From bringing Chicago house legend Larry Heard to the iconic Melbourne Town Hall for his debut Australian performance, to an ambient journey led by Midori Tikada among the ruins of Middle Head Fortifications in Sydney Harbour National Park. He has successfully spearheaded three festival brands that have each carved out a distinct identity within the music landscape. His bold vision transformed Coburg Velodrome into a functioning festival location, hosting his Freedom Time Festivals for many years and now Sun Cycle. The move opening up the possibilities of use for a now cherished location. Jamie has continued to champion underground DJs and artists, consistently pulling off spirited parties that draw numbers no matter how unknown the headliner. A triumph in supporting the scene he loves and proof of the trust in quality he is able to cultivate. He has put on countless club nights including Lost Weekend with Myles Mac, a defining Melbourne favourite that characterized the scene throughout the late 00s. Furthermore, Jamie has offered much consultancy work for many brands and venues along the way. For the better part of a decade he curated and booked all music programmes for Red Bull Music Australia. This included the annual Red Bull Weekender, and free monthly Red Bull Music Academy club nights that ran nationally. His creative lead shaping RBMA as one of the most respected and iconic music brands of recent years, demonstrating ways to celebrate authenticity and nuance of niche music under a commercial partnership.
His love affair with music has extended to all kinds of ventures beyond the CR company itself. As a DJ he played around the world including festivals such as Dekmantel, Splendour In The Grass and We Out Here, while he has featured on globally respected platforms like Beats In Space, The Lot, Red Light Radio, Worldwide Fm and Stamp The Wax’s Diggers Directory. A renowned record digger, he sits in a rarified territory acknowledged by some of the world’s most authoritative inner circles. Such passion for uncovering lost treasures led to forming Crown Ruler Records with fellow record nut, Jeramy Spellacy. The reissue label and web store have found a global following. Jamie has overlooked all aspects of running a record label including contracting, mastering, product design, manufacturing and distribution, PR and marketing.
Jamie is a formidable operator within the music industry. An impressive problem solver, with ambitious ideas, his body of work has demonstrated ways of finding deserving outcomes for a scene he loves. He continues to stand at the forefront of musical movements, providing a web of services that champion quality underground talent.
